Assignment #2

Download and read instructions for Assignment #2.
Download Excel Spreadsheet for Assignment #2 and save the file in your computer in a folder for this class. Name the file: YourLastName BusAc186 Assignment 02

Find the web site for J C Penney Department store. Do the same for this company as you did for Assignment #2. Go to the company’s web site and look for a link to the Investor’s pages. Go to the Investor’s Pages and locate the Annual Report for last year. The report should include the Financial reports for last year and at least one prior year. Download and save the Financial Statements from the report. You will need three year’s worth of Financial Reports, so also download and save the previous year’s Annual Report if your company’s report does not include at least 3 years worth of Financial Statements. Open the Excel Spreadsheet provided under the assignment link for Assignment #2. Save it to your computer. Complete the spreadsheet in all of the highlighted cells with information you find in the financial Statements. Be sure to do 3 year’s worth of data.

Compute the ratios on the rows that follow the Financial Report Highlights. USE EXCEL to compute the ratios. Do NOT calculate the ratios elsewhere and copy the answers into the spreadsheet. Credit will not be awarded for ratios that are not computed in Excel. Your instructor needs to be able to see your formulas in Excel in order to grade your work. Try to enter your formulas using point and click on the cells containing the data you are entering in the formulas.
For the Stock price, get it from today’s price posted on the Internet from any finance Web Site such as Yahoo finance.

Open and take another look at the Financials and ratios you found and calculated for Assignment #1 Write a double spaced 2 page paper comparing the Financials and ESPECIALLY the Ratios that you have calculated. for both companies. Did you find any trends for Macy’s? Penny’s? Using the ratios calculated, does the financial data indicate that one company or the other has a particular strength? or weakness? Are there any areas where one company is stronger or weaker than the other? Compare P/E ratios. Check to see P/E ratios for other competitors (You should be able to get that directly off of Yahoo Finance or other Financial web sites.) Does any company have a significantly higher (or lower) P/E Ratio? Considering that over the long haul, all numbers tend to gravitate to the mean, can you recommend one stock over another for an investor to purchase. ? What other indications do you see about the strengths and weaknesses of the 2 companies that you are analyzing?
